Each week's new research from the top international journals, read for what it actually shows.

Mind-body mastery covers what a person can act on: sleep, stress and mood, exercise, nutrition, focus and breathing, longevity and ageing. The weekly research digest gathers new studies from leading journals and preprint servers, labels the study design wherever it can be identified, and keeps asking about sample size, funding and who the result applies to. We help you read the evidence; we do not make medical decisions for you.

A crunch count is a scoreboard, not a body signal.

Today (Oct 25), a group of internet founders in Guangdong chased a trending "thin-muscle" theory, forming a group to compete over who'd get abs first. On day one, 4 of the 7 were hospitalized with lower-back injuries. The one who posted the video already had a lumbar disc herniation and sat all day; he did 300 crunches, felt fine, then couldn't stand up that evening: seven days in the hospital.

Mind-body mastery: six areas

Where to start in each area, and the traps to check before trusting a headline. Links go to public-health bodies; we add no advice of our own.

  1. Sleep

Most sleep research is observational: people who sleep badly and people who are ill are often the same people.

    Common misreading
"Short sleep causes disease." Many studies only show the two occur together; illness can also disturb sleep first.“睡得少导致生病”。
Was sleep self-reported, or measured by a device or a sleep lab?

  2. Stress & mood

Small samples, short follow-up and self-rated scales are common; a statistically significant change can still be small in daily life.

    Common misreading
Treating a better score on a questionnaire as "anxiety solved".
How big is the effect, and what did the control group do?

  3. Exercise运动

Healthier people tend to move more, so cohorts can overstate what exercise itself does (healthy-user bias).

    Common misreading
"People who exercise live longer" read as an exact, personal promise.
Was activity measured by questionnaire or by an accelerometer?

    WHO 2020 guidelines

  4. Nutrition营养

Diet is hard to measure and foods travel together; industry funding is common in this field.

    Common misreading
One food judged in isolation, without asking what it replaced.
Who paid for it, and what was the comparison diet?

  5. Focus, meditation & breathing

Participants know what they are doing, so blinding is hard and expectation effects are large.

    Common misreading
Beating a waiting list counted as beating any other activity.
Was the control a waiting list or an active alternative?

  6. Longevity & ageing

Lifespan results in mice or worms, and shifts in an "ageing clock", are not evidence of longer human lives.

    Common misreading
A biomarker change reported as "reversing ageing".
Is the outcome real disease or death, or a marker?

How to read the evidence labels

What each study design can and cannot tell you. The label describes the design, not the quality of a particular paper.

  1. Systematic review & meta-analysis

Pools many studies on one question. Only as good as the studies it pools.

    Can answer能回答
What the body of evidence says overall, and how consistent it is.
    Cannot answer
Anything the original studies could not; it can also pool the same bias.

Chance decides who gets what, so the groups differ mainly in the intervention.

    Can answer能回答
Whether the intervention changed the outcome, in people like those enrolled.
    Cannot answer
Long-term effects beyond follow-up, or people unlike those enrolled.

  3. Cohort & other observational studies

Follows people as they live. Shows associations; confounding can mimic cause.

    Can answer能回答
Who tends to have which outcomes, over long periods and in large groups.
    Cannot answer
On its own, whether changing the exposure would change the outcome.

  4. Mendelian randomisation

Uses genetic variants as a natural experiment for a lifelong exposure.

    Can answer能回答
Whether a lifelong difference in an exposure is plausibly causal.
    Cannot answer
What a short change in adulthood would do; results rest on strong assumptions.

    BMJ 2018 guideBMJ 2018 年指南

  5. Animal & cell studies

Explore mechanisms under controlled conditions. Many findings never carry over to people.

    Can answer能回答
How something might work, and what is worth testing in humans.
    Cannot answer
Whether it works, or is safe, in people.

  6. Preprints预印本

Shared before peer review. Fast, sometimes important, and sometimes changed or withdrawn later.

    Can answer能回答
What researchers are finding now, before journals publish it.
    Cannot answer
Whether the work has passed independent review. Always read as not peer reviewed.

Questions we ask of every health study

  1. What kind of study is this, and can that design answer a cause-and-effect question?
  2. How many people, followed for how long, and was the outcome real illness or a marker?
  3. How big is the effect in absolute terms, not just relative risk?
  4. Who funded it, and do the authors declare conflicts of interest?
  5. Who does the result apply to: which ages, sexes, countries and health conditions?
  6. Has it been repeated independently, and what do systematic reviews in the field say?
  7. If this is a mouse or cell finding, how many steps is it from evidence in people?
  8. What would we expect to see if this conclusion were wrong?

How this page works

We gather public sources several times a day and keep only what passes two gates: still useful in a year, and you can think or do one new thing after reading it. Kept items are translated before publishing, with one line on what each changes, and the page is rebuilt as plain HTML, so it reads entirely in English or entirely in Chinese. Each item links to the original; WAKENEX readings are our own essays. Machine-readable copies are listed on the page for AI agents.
