Awakening Loop
OBSERVE / UNDERSTAND / CHOOSE / CREATE / REVIEW / REVISE
The Awakening Loop is WAKENEX's six-step method: Encounter change, Understand the system, Make a deliberate choice, Use leverage and act, Examine real feedback, and Revise understanding and methods. It is a loop, not a ladder: step 6 leads back to step 1 with better questions, and no step marks the process as complete.

The six steps of the Awakening Loop at a glance
| Step | Short label | Name | Core question |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | OBSERVE | Encounter change | What possibilities have appeared that you did not know about before? |
| 2 | UNDERSTAND | Understand the system | Why is it happening? Who takes part, who benefits, and what constraints apply? |
| 3 | CHOOSE | Make a deliberate choice | What does this have to do with me? What problem do I really want to solve? |
| 4 | CREATE | Use leverage and act | What tools and resources can I use to make a small attempt that can be tested? |
| 5 | REVIEW | Examine real feedback | What actually happened? What were the effects, the costs and the surprises? |
| 6 | REVISE | Revise understanding and methods | Which judgment needs to change? Which methods are worth keeping, scaling up or stopping? |
Step 1 of the Awakening Loop · Encounter change
- Core question
- What possibilities have appeared that you did not know about before?
- What it involves
- Watch for change in finance, AI, independent media and other fields, and widen the range of choices you can see.
- What you can record
- Sources, dates, new findings and information not yet verified.
Step 2 of the Awakening Loop · Understand the system
- Core question
- Why is it happening? Who takes part, who benefits, and what constraints apply?
- What it involves
- Analyze the participants, rules, resources, incentives, costs and feedback, and form an explanation that can be tested.
- What you can record
- Facts, interpretations, hypotheses and evidence that could overturn your judgment.
Step 3 of the Awakening Loop · Make a deliberate choice
- Core question
- What does this have to do with me? What problem do I really want to solve?
- What it involves
- Be clear about your own goals, conditions, limits and the costs you are willing to bear, then decide what to do, what to postpone and what to stop.
- What you can record
- Goals, the reasons for your judgment, constraints and the options you gave up.
Step 4 of the Awakening Loop · Use leverage and act
- Core question
- What tools and resources can I use to make a small attempt that can be tested?
- What it involves
- Combine knowledge, tools, software, content, capital or collaboration; test at a suitable scale first, then decide whether to scale up.
- What you can record
- Actions, deliverables, inputs, expected results and the conditions for testing them.
Step 5 of the Awakening Loop · Examine real feedback
- Core question
- What actually happened? What were the effects, the costs and the surprises?
- What it involves
- Check real-world results, and keep tool effects, reach, commercial demand and changes in personal capability apart.
- What you can record
- Actual results, evidence, costs, errors and the gap between results and expectations.
Step 6 of the Awakening Loop · Revise understanding and methods
- Core question
- Which judgment needs to change? Which methods are worth keeping, scaling up or stopping?
- What it involves
- Revise judgments, processes and choices based on feedback, ask better questions, then start the next round of observation and action.
- What you can record
- The judgments you revised, the methods you kept or stopped, and the questions for the next round.
What happens after step 6 of the Awakening Loop?
After revising, observe again with better questions, and re-examine your own goals and explanations. Understanding grows through exposure, and also through what you have done, tested and revised yourself.
Do you have to go through all six steps of the Awakening Loop every time?
“Awakening” runs through every WAKENEX column, not only the Awakening Stories column. A single piece can focus on one question; it does not have to show all six steps mechanically every time.
Practice example (an example of the method, not a record of a project that has happened)
Discover a new AI capability → study which problems it can solve and what its limits are → decide whether to use it in your own content business → build the workflow and make the work → check cost, accuracy, reader feedback and demand → bring what works into your working system, and turn what failed into the next round's research questions.
How is the Awakening Loop different from OODA or PDCA?
The Awakening Loop belongs to the family of feedback loops, alongside frameworks such as OODA and PDCA.
In the Awakening Loop, step 3 ties each decision to your own goals and the costs you are willing to bear, and step 5 keeps tool effects, reach, commercial demand and changes in personal capability apart.
What is the Awakening Loop not?
The Awakening Loop is not:
- Not a ladder of stages: step 6 leads back to step 1, and no step marks the process as complete.
- Not a template every piece must fill: one piece can focus on one question.
- Not a promise of results: both effective methods and unverified mistakes can be amplified.
- Not a record of completed projects: the example on this page is a method example, not a record of a project that has happened.
