A crunch count is a scoreboard, not a body signal.

In a bright sunlit plaza under a clear sky, a crowd of small silhouetted figures scramble over one another up a tall stepped pedestal, racing with arms raised to be first to touch a giant gleaming golden trophy at the top. Beside them stands a large round pressure gauge whose single needle is swung hard into a deep crimson danger arc, glowing but ignored by the racing crowd. The overlaid Chinese headline reads that everyone competes over who is faster while the body is sounding the alarm.

Today (Oct 25), a group of internet founders in Guangdong chased a trending "thin-muscle" theory, forming a group to compete over who'd get abs first. On day one, 4 of the 7 were hospitalized with lower-back injuries. The one who posted the video already had a lumbar disc herniation and sat all day; he did 300 crunches, felt fine, then couldn't stand up that evening: seven days in the hospital.

The crunches aren't the culprit; the leaderboard is. Compress training into one comparable number (how many, who's faster) and that number only answers "did I beat the others today." It gets read as the answer to a different question: is my body progressing and able to take this. Those are decided by completely different feedback: whether you recover, whether your form holds, whether the pain is soreness or damage, not the counter.

The second-order effect is the quiet one: when a group competes on one external number, every different starting point (old injuries, years of sitting, poor form) gets flattened, and the person who most needs to slow down is pushed to pile on volume, and goes down first.

What this means for you: next time you push something by keeping pace and hitting a number, ask which question that number actually answers. Your body gives the most honest one.

What would change this view: if people who go by their own recovery, ignoring the group's count, get hurt early just as often as those chasing the leaderboard, this is wrong.

This is research, not medical advice.
