Nvidia's lock on AI compute won't be broken by a better chip.

A bright sunlit turquoise-and-white plaza. On the right stands one tall glossy golden fuel-style dispenser with a big round price dial whose needle is swinging downward; a small faceless worker seen from behind has just wheeled in a second plain grey dispenser beside it and clipped on a thin hose that barely trickles. The instant the second supply appears, the first one's price needle bends down. Bold white text reads: A second source caps the price. A line of Chinese below reads:

It gets worn down by a second supplier that buyers manufacture to cap its pricing power. On October 28 The Information reported that OpenAI, a longtime Nvidia customer, plans to buy Google's TPUs. Within hours OpenAI clarified it is only trialing lower-tier TPUs at small scale, still runs training and inference mainly on Nvidia and AMD, and has no plans to deploy at scale. The same day Oracle said it will be the first major cloud outside Google's own to offer TPUs, opening them to customers from 2027.

Put the two together and the real story isn't "Google's chip won." AI compute demand is effectively unbounded and supply is tight, so buyers' worst fear is being captive to one supplier on price and allocation. The mere signal, "we're testing, we could switch," already caps Nvidia's bargaining power, even if almost no chips actually move. And Google keeps its best TPUs for its own Gemini; it has no intention of truly arming a rival. So this grinds on Nvidia's margins rather than rewriting whose model is best.

It works the same for you. Leverage was never "I already switched suppliers"; it's "I can switch at any time." Being locked into one model, one cloud, one platform is exactly the position Nvidia is now losing. Keeping a credible backup for the layer you can't live without is itself leverage.

This breaks if, within a quarter, OpenAI actually moves a meaningful share of training or inference to Google's TPUs, not lower-tier trials — then a chip has beaten the moat on performance, not just procurement.

Research, not investment advice.
