Mastercard spelled that out on Oct 27. A cross-border remittance is really three legs: fiat into a stablecoin (on-ramp), the on-chain transfer, and the stablecoin back into local fiat (off-ramp). Stablecoins compressed that middle leg to seconds and cents, so people assume it's solved. But Matthew Driver, Mastercard's EVP for Services in Asia-Pacific, told CNBC plainly: if the conversions at both ends are still slow, a fast middle changes little — he calls it the “stablecoin sandwich.”

Stablecoins only changed the middle step. On-ramp and off-ramp still hinge on local banking rails, FX depth in thin currency pairs, and compliance checks, so the time and the spread simply pile back onto the two ends. So don't judge a stablecoin remittance product by “settles in seconds”; price the whole round trip, from your fiat to the recipient's fiat.

And because the value moved to the ends, Mastercard this month launched the Global Money Platform — unifying fiat and stablecoin accounts with real-time conversion and bank payouts — and bought BVNK: it earns exactly the fee the transfer leg no longer does. Conversely, where both ends already hold deep stablecoin liquidity, the sandwich disappears and the speed gain is real. What would change this view? If, in some thin corridor, the on-ramp and off-ramp spreads compress to near zero, the bottleneck is no longer at the ends.
