A Leveraged ETF Rents You a Day, Not a Thesis杠杆 ETF 租给你的是一天,不是一个判断

Tradr is winding down its 2x long and 2x short SK Hynix funds three months after launch. The wrapper, not the company, is the real story.

A leveraged single-stock ETF is not a stronger version of owning the stock. It is a different instrument that happens to borrow the stock's name. On October 26, 2026, Tradr ETFs said it would liquidate both its 2x long and its 2x short SK Hynix funds, the Tradr 2X Long SK hynix Daily ETF (SKHA) and the Tradr 2X Short SK hynix Daily ETF (SKHN), roughly three months after they debuted in July. Last trading day is November 5; the cash goes back to holders around November 12. Read quickly, it is a small story about a niche product. Read closely, it is a clean lesson in who pays for leverage and who decides when the game ends.

The default read is simple and wrong. If you believe SK Hynix rides the memory-chip and AI build-out, a 2x fund looks like the same bet with the volume turned up: right call, bigger payoff. That picture treats the fund as a dial on your conviction. It is not. The word that does the damage is "daily."

These products promise two times the daily move of the stock, and they reset every day to keep that ratio. To stay at 2x after the stock rises, the fund has to add exposure; after it falls, it has to cut exposure. So it is structurally forced to buy into strength and sell into weakness, every single day, by design rather than by panic. Over one day the math is clean. Over many days it compounds, and the compounding is where the cost hides.

The cost you pay is in the path, not in the fee

Compounding daily resets produces what the regulators call decay. The US Securities and Exchange Commission's investor bulletin on leveraged and inverse ETFs says it plainly: these funds reset daily, their returns over weeks or months "can differ significantly" from the stated multiple, and the effect can bite over as little as two days. The bulletin's own example shows a 2x fund falling 6% over a stretch in which its index rose 2%. The choppier the ride, the worse the drag, regardless of where the stock finally lands.

Put numbers on it. Say the stock climbs 10% one day and gives it all back the next, a 9.1% fall that returns it to exactly where it started. Flat over two days, no harm if you simply hold the shares. The 2x fund rises 20% on day one, then falls about 18.2% on day two: 1.20 times 0.818 is roughly 0.982. You are down nearly 2% on a stock that went nowhere. Nobody charged you a fee for that loss; the daily reset charged it for them. Stretch the same sawtooth across a volatile quarter and the small bites compound into real money, which is why a fund can end deeply underwater on a stock that finished the period higher.

You do not have to take a regulator's word for it. The issuers say the same thing in their own prospectuses. The filing for a different 2x long SK Hynix daily fund, run by another manager, warns that it "will lose money if the underlying stock's performance is flat, and it is possible that the Fund will lose money even if the underlying stock's performance increases" over periods longer than a day, and that it is "designed for short-term tactical trading, often single-day holds." That language is boilerplate across the category, which is the point: every issuer of these products discloses the decay in writing. The headline is the leverage. The fine print is the decay. Most buyers read the headline.

SK Hynix is the case, leverage is the subject

Watch what the two Tradr funds did together. A long fund and a short fund on the same stock are opposite bets, yet both drained toward the wind-down. Most of that is flows, not decay: as SK Hynix reversed and the AI trade cooled, investors pulled money out of both sides, and combined assets fell to the low single-digit millions. Bloomberg put the figure at about $1.3 million, down more than sixty percent from the peak; The Korea Times cited just over $2 million a few days earlier. Set the outflows aside and the structure still bites. A daily-reset pair erodes the value of whatever you hold when the tape whips around, because decay does not care which direction you picked. The long holder and the short holder can both be right about the trend for a week and both still watch their shares grind lower. The vehicle takes its cut from motion itself.

The backdrop matters only as the trigger. The AI-driven rally that lifted memory names through the first half of 2026 cooled in the second half, SK Hynix's run reversed, and retail appetite for amplified Korea bets drained with it. None of that changes the mechanism. It just removed the one condition under which a daily-reset fund flatters its holder: a smooth, one-directional move. Take away the straight line and the product's true nature shows.

Then comes the part that gets least attention and matters most. When the assets got too small to run profitably, Tradr did not ask holders. It announced a liquidation. Holders of a leveraged ETF own amplified exposure to one day at a time, and they own exactly none of the decision about when the product stops existing. You rented the upside by the day. The decay was the rent. And the landlord kept the keys to the building.

The honest counterargument, and why it sharpens the point

The strongest case against reading too much into this runs like so. The funds were not euthanized because decay "failed" anyone. They were closed for ordinary business reasons: a fund holding one or two million dollars is uneconomic to operate, and South Korean regulators have been tightening the rules on leveraged products at the same time. On that view, the liquidation is an issuer-and-regulator story, not a cautionary tale about compounding.

That is true, and it does not rescue the holder. Decay explains why owning these funds for months was a poor deal. The thin assets explain why the product died. Those are two different clocks running at once, and the retail buyer is exposed to both. The lesson is not that leverage is fraud. It is that a daily-reset wrapper couples a known performance cost to a lifespan you do not control, and the second risk is the one almost nobody prices. A holder can model the decay with a spreadsheet; the holder cannot model the day an issuer decides a two-million-dollar fund is not worth running. Both costs landed on the same person, and only one of them appeared in any sales page.

This is not a one-issuer quirk. In the same week, ProShares filed to withdraw its registrations, submitted October 19, for planned leveraged funds tracking Hyundai Motor and Samsung Electro-Mechanics, products it had only registered in June. A category that launched fast in a hot tape is retreating just as fast in a cold one. Short lifespans come with the territory of single-stock leverage, which depends on a crowd that wants maximum exposure to one name right now and tends to disappear the moment that name stops going up.

Separate the view from the vehicle

The usable idea is a habit, not a ticker. Before you reach for leverage, split the decision in two. First, the view: what do you actually believe about the company and over what horizon? Second, the vehicle: does the instrument you are about to buy deliver that view over that horizon, or something quietly different? A daily-reset ETF answers a one-day question. If your thesis on SK Hynix is measured in months, the wrapper is wrong for it even when your read on the company is right. Being correct about the business and careless about the structure still loses money, and it loses it in a way that looks, on the statement, like you were simply wrong about the stock. The same discipline travels well beyond ETFs. A startup equity grant, a margin loan, a perpetual futures position, a structured note: each bundles a view with a mechanism, and the mechanism carries costs and expiry terms the marketing rarely leads with. The question to ask of any leveraged thing is not only whether you are right, but who wrote the rules for how long you get to stay right, and what you are paying while you wait.

I would want one thing to change my mind. If independent return data showed that over their roughly three-month life SKHA and SKHN tracked close to plus and minus two times SK Hynix's cumulative move, with little path-dependent gap, and Tradr's liquidation notice cited only the new Korean rules rather than assets and economics, then the decay argument would be mostly noise here and the story really would be just regulation. I will check the fund's net-asset-value history against the stock and the official notice by mid-December. Until then, the evidence points the other way: the decay was real and the single-day design was real, and the wrapper, not a wrong call on the company, is what turned a plausible view into a losing position.

SK Hynix
