A Betting Line Is Not a Boardroom Decision
What Polymarket's Anthropic-IPO odds actually measure, and the question they can't answer.

A prediction-market probability is a price on belief, and belief is a different thing from a company's decision. When you read that "Polymarket gives Anthropic a 65% chance of listing as $ANT," you are reading what bettors currently believe, dressed up as what the company will do, and those are two different things decided by two different sets of people.
Polymarket is a site where people buy and sell contracts that pay out if some event happens by a set date. Anthropic is the AI lab behind the Claude models, and for months it has been reported to be preparing a stock-market listing. Put those together and you get a lively market in guesses: when it will list, at what price, under which ticker. A ticker is the short code a stock trades under; ANT is the one bettors are favoring. None of it has been confirmed by Anthropic.
The stakes are why the rumor travels. Reporting pegs Anthropic's last private valuation near $965 billion in May 2026 and projects a first-day market value around $1.8 to $2 trillion on a raise of up to $100 billion, figures large enough that a listing would be one of the biggest ever. I report those as what they are: reported and projected, not confirmed by the company. The size is also why a betting market sprang up around the timing at all, and why its numbers get quoted as if Anthropic had spoken.
The default reading is simple. A number near 70% sounds like a forecast, so "72% by November" becomes "it will probably list in November," and "65% ANT" becomes "the ticker is basically set." That reading makes two quiet jumps, and both are wrong.
A market price is the clearing price of a bet, not a probability handed down from somewhere
Start with what the number actually is. On Polymarket a "Yes" share trades between zero and one dollar and pays a dollar if the event happens. If it trades at 0.65, buyers are willing to pay 65 cents now for a dollar later. That looks like a 65% probability, and people treat it as one. Allium, a firm that builds tools to read these markets, puts it plainly: a "Yes" token at 0.88 "does not mean the true probability is exactly 88 percent," because the price "also absorbs trading fees, the bid-ask spread, and the cost of locking up capital until the market resolves." Their one-line summary is the part worth keeping: these prices "measure crowd belief. They do not predict outcomes."
So the number is a price, and like any price it is set at the margin, by whoever is trading right now, net of the frictions of trading. It tells you what the last and most motivated bettor will pay. On a thick, heavily traded market that marginal belief can be a sharp estimate. On a thin one it is a mood with a decimal point attached.

Whether a company lists, and when, is answered by a filing, not a vote
Now hold that number up against the question it is being used to answer. Whether Anthropic goes public, on what date, and under which ticker is decided by its board, its bankers, and a registration document called an S-1 that has to clear the Securities and Exchange Commission before shares can trade. The ticker is reserved with the exchange. The date moves with market conditions and the pace of the regulator's review. None of those actors sits on Polymarket, and no quantity of bets changes the review timeline or the board's choice.
This is the whole case, and it is the idea I keep returning to: match the question to the feedback that can actually answer it. Playback counts tell you about reach and say nothing about whether a product is any good. A benchmark score grades a test rather than real-world skill. A betting line works the same way, carrying information about belief and none about a decision that only a company and its regulator get to make. Use one kind of feedback to answer a different kind of question and you will be confidently wrong at exactly the moments that matter.
The tell is that the number wobbles when a fact would hold still
If the odds were tracking a settled fact, they would sit still. They do not. Take the single line "Anthropic IPO by November 30." One read-out dated September 18 put it at 79%. Ten days later, on September 28, another report had the same line at 54 to 58.5%. Through October the figure has been quoted around 57%, 62% and 72% depending on the day and the outlet. The ticker tells the same story: ANT sat near 44% on October 24 and was cited around 65% shortly after, while a separate reading had it closer to 21%. A real filing date does not swing twenty-five points in a week and a half. A thin market, re-priced by a handful of trades and a fresh headline, does exactly that. That wobble is what a price looks like while it is still discovering belief in real time.
The strongest case for trusting the odds, stated at full strength
Here is the best argument against me, and it deserves respect. Large prediction markets are, in aggregate, remarkably well-calibrated. Across many thousands of resolved questions, Polymarket and the regulated venue Kalshi post Brier scores around 0.09; a Brier score grades probabilistic forecasts, lower is better, and 0.09 is very good. Sort their markets into buckets and events priced at 30% happen about 30% of the time, events priced at 70% happen about 70% of the time, with the gap between price and reality down near a single percentage point in the week before a market closes. In 2024 the political markets called 23 of 28 major races, better than four in five. If the crowd is that honest on average, why sneer at one more number?
Calibration is real, and it breaks down exactly where this market sits
Because the average hides where the accuracy comes from, and this market sits in the weak spot. The same research that documents the calibration also documents its limits. Higher trading volume lines up with lower Brier scores. Professional traders entering a market can deepen it roughly thirtyfold and turn "a noisy signal into a sharp one." The wide errors cluster in thinly traded markets and in novel, unprecedented events. A single private company's listing date has no base rate and nothing a trader can directly observe. Companies go public all the time, but this company goes public once, so the base rate that steadies an election market is simply absent here. Polymarket does not publish the trade volume on these lines, so I cannot put a figure on how thin they are; the price swings do it for me, since a line that jumps twenty-five points on a headline has nothing like deep two-sided flow holding it in place. It is the thin, novel corner of the board, not the deep and well-worn political market that earned the track record. The calibration built on liquid elections does not carry over to a boutique bet on one firm's paperwork. So the honest version of the number reads less like "72% likely" and more like "the thin crowd betting here currently leans yes, and has repriced that lean three times this month."
Media turn the odds into news, and the news feeds the market
There is a second move worth seeing, because it is what makes a soft number feel hard. An outlet reports the odds. The report becomes a headline about traders betting on the ticker. The headline pulls in readers, some of whom place a bet, which moves the odds, which produces the next headline. Belief, coverage, and more belief chase each other in a circle, and after a few laps an unconfirmed rumor starts to look like a settled plan with a date attached. Nothing about the company changed in that circle. The loop did the work, and the loop runs on attention, not on anything Anthropic did.

What to do when you read "markets say company X will list"
Treat the odds as a sentiment reading and go find the primary document. Two quick questions settle most of it. First, is this market thick enough to be sharp, with real volume and many traders, or is it a quiet corner moved by a few bets? Second, is the thing being priced something a trader can observe, like a vote count on election night, or is it locked inside a company and a regulator, like a filing date? If the market is thin and the fact is unobservable, the number is mood, and you read the S-1 and the official announcement before you time anything around it. That holds whether you are deciding where to put your attention or your money.
What would change my read
I would drop this if the Anthropic markets, across at least three separate questions and in the weeks before the event, priced the real listing date and the real ticker above 70% and the company then matched them. That would mean the odds were tracking reality rather than mood, and reading them as near-fact would be fair. The place to check is not another article about the odds. It is the SEC's filing system and Anthropic's own announcement, measured against how these specific markets actually resolved.
None of this is a verdict on Anthropic, on its value, or on whether a listing would be a good thing. It is a note about reading a number for what it is. The market can price how much people believe a rumor. It cannot price what a board has not yet decided.
This is research, not investment advice.
