# The AI coding leaderboard can't rank its own top models.

**In one line:** Leaderboard answers tier, not your cost; at top, rank is noise.

**WAKENEX concept:** [Match the feedback to the question](https://wakenex.com/concepts/match-the-feedback-to-the-question/)

![Satirical concept image: under a tall gate of blue light, a towering faceless official presses a giant caliper into the space between two identical trophy figures standing at exactly the same height and finds no gap at all, while a huge scoreboard behind them has gone dark and blank.](https://wakenex.com/assets/notes/the-ai-coding-leaderboard-cant-rank-its-own-top-models/cover-1600.jpg?v=8a2112a79c)

You pay up to 2x for the #1 — and ship the same work.

It ranks tier, not your cost. The number that decides your bill ↓

OUR READ
Benchmarks tell you whether a model is frontier-tier — not which setup ships your work at the lowest cost. At the very top, the ranking is statistical noise.

WHAT HAPPENED
→ A Sep 15 statistical audit of 254 SWE-bench submissions: the top two systems each solved exactly 396 of 500 tasks.
→ McNemar's test separated none of the 29 adjacent top-thirty pairs; only 164 of 500 tasks tell any leader apart.
→ Terminal-Bench 4.0 (Oct 18, average of 3 runs): Opus 5.5 scored 65.15% vs Sonnet 5.5's 64.14% — a 1.01-point gap, at 2x the list price ($4/$20 vs $2/$10 per million tokens).

WHY IT MATTERS
A leaderboard answers capability; your bill answers cost; neither answers the other.

Your own harness and prompts swing results 29.8 points within a single model — far more than the 8.8-point spread across the whole top thirty. You are buying a rank your own setup overwhelms.

BEST CASE AGAINST US
The same audit says the board still orders the full field — it cleanly separates a frontier model from a weak one. Use it to pick the tier, not to split the top.

DO THIS WEEK
If you choose AI coding tools, run a two-day bake-off on your real tasks and measure cost per accepted change, not board rank.

We'd revise if an independent study shows rank among the top models predicts real cost per accepted change or shipped throughput.
