# The AI buildout flipped from an equity story to a credit story.

**In one line:** The AI buildout flipped from an equity story to a credit story.

![A bright, sunlit surreal scene. A huge glowing modern data center rises into a clear sky, but its entire foundation is a towering, buckling stack of blank paper slips instead of solid ground, while only a thin trickle of generic coins dribbles from the base into a tiny bucket far below. Warm sunlight breaks across the structure. Headline reads 'The AI Buildout Is Now a Credit Story' with a line of Chinese below it: AI 基建已从股权故事变成信贷故事.](https://wakenex.com/assets/notes/the-ai-buildout-flipped-from-an-equity-story-to-a-credit/cover-1600.jpg?v=cb136fd447)

On Thursday the Nasdaq closed down 1.37% to 26,184.72 and Alphabet fell 12.6%. The trigger was one line in Alphabet's quarter: free cash flow of negative $9.1 billion, its second straight negative quarter, even as capital spending rose to $51.3 billion with guidance pointing higher again in 2027.

Read it plainly. The most profitable company in the group can no longer build its data centers out of the cash the business generates. Microsoft spent $45.2 billion last quarter and guided to more than $50 billion next. When operating cash flow stops covering capex, the gap gets filled with debt: the big cloud builders had already sold about $255 billion of unsecured bonds by mid-October, and Morgan Stanley models roughly $600 billion of combined cash burn across them in 2027.

That moves who holds the risk. An equity-funded buildout leaves the downside with shareholders who chose the bet. A credit-funded one pushes it onto bondholders, future cash flows, and the cost of refinancing, and credit reprices fast and without sentiment. The selloff wasn't the market losing faith in AI; it was the market noticing the invoice is now payable and starting to ask who signs for it.

We'd revise this if hyperscaler free cash flow turns positive again while capital spending keeps climbing, which would mean the buildout is self-funding after all.

Research, not investment advice.
