# Tesla's Q3, out Oct 21, beat on free cash flow because it spent less, while GAAP operating income fell 56% to $718M.

**In one line:** Tesla's beat came from spending less, not selling more.

**WAKENEX concept:** [Match the feedback to the question](https://wakenex.com/concepts/match-the-feedback-to-the-question/)

![Beside a factory with a red Tesla logo, a giant glass tank brims with liquid gold fed by only a thin pipe from the factory, while a worker turns a huge red valve shut on the thick pipe that should carry money to a half-built new factory frame with idle cranes.](https://wakenex.com/assets/notes/teslas-q3-out-oct-21-beat-on-free-cash-flow-because-it-spent/cover-1600.jpg?v=b36c037a06)

The default read is a strong quarter: adjusted EPS of $0.48 against $0.44 expected, and $1.53B of free cash flow where analysts had pencilled in a burn.

Start from the definition instead. Free cash flow is the cash a business brings in minus what it invests. Capex came in at $4.73B against an expected $7.96B, so a large part of that cash came from not spending. Revenue was flat at $28.05B, average selling prices fell, and operating margin dropped from 5.8% to 2.6%. The engine earned less; the company built less.

Cash raised by cutting investment is borrowed from the future, unless the cut spending was waste. That is the question this quarter poses, and the headline numbers skip it.

When any company beats on cash, read the capex line before the headline. If it fell, ask what didn't get built.

We'd change our view if operating income recovers over the next two quarters while capex returns to a $7–8B pace.

Research, not investment advice.
