# Substack's new feed controls tune the inputs, not the ranking.

**In one line:** Feed controls tune the inputs, not the ranking.

![Satirical concept image: a single hand turns a small brass knob on the simple front panel of a large wooden broadcast console, while the whole back of the console is swung open to reveal an enormous inner machine of tuners, cables, gears and a broadcast antenna, worked by a much larger shadowed figure seen from behind — the front knob moves the inputs, but the hidden operator actually runs the broadcast, all lit by a tall gate of blue light.](https://wakenex.com/assets/notes/substacks-new-feed-controls-tune-the-inputs-not-the-ranking/cover-1600.jpg?v=a800a00e3f)

You get the knobs. Substack keeps the machine that still decides who gets paid.

And most of the money flows through the one feed you can't opt out of ↓

OUR READ
Substack handed readers a dial: fewer videos, muted keywords, topic sliders, AI labels.
But that dial moves the inputs, not the algorithm. The weights, the default feed and the money-making Notes feed belong to the platform.

WHAT HAPPENED
→ Oct 14: Substack launched reader 'content preferences' — sliders for video, audio, longform and community, plus AI-content labels.
→ Readers can mute up to 50 keywords and dial topics up or down, as Meta and TikTok did this year.
→ Substack said its app drove nearly 800,000 paid and 80 million free subs in six months — over half of paid subs came from the Notes feed.

WHY IT MATTERS
A dial over the inputs is not a hand on the ranking.
Readers adjust what they send in; Substack sets how much each signal counts, with no opt-out of ranking.
For creators, reach stops being what the algorithm infers about your work and becomes whether your format and topic survive each reader's filters. One muted word can mean zero reach — breadth loses to labeled niches.

BEST CASE AGAINST US
Optimists call it real power: customizers get a better feed, and creators who make what people dial up win. True — for the few who touch settings. The default feed, weighting and paid engine stay with Substack.

DO THIS WEEK
If you build on Substack, test whether a sharper, labeled focus beats a generalist feed at surviving reader filters. Don't read 'more control' as safer reach.

This breaks if Substack shows customization meaningfully shifts reach away from its default ranking, or ships a true no-ranking opt-out.
