# Strategy's index seat was propping its bitcoin machine — not proving bitcoin.

**In one line:** Strategy's index membership propped its flywheel, not bitcoin.

![A satirical concept scene: a massive chrome flywheel spins on a pedestal, powered by a single cable running to one glowing blue wall-socket; a giant hand pulls the plug half-out and the wheel wobbles off balance, shedding blue sparks, while a small silhouetted figure beneath braces against the tilt. A gate of blue light glows behind.](https://wakenex.com/assets/notes/strategys-index-seat-was-propping-its-bitcoin-machine/cover-1600.jpg?v=f1df8a7216)

MSCI's Nov 30 cut removes a quiet bid; late MSTR holders inherit the drawdown.

The $2.8B "forced selling" isn't the real story. Here's what is. ↓

OUR READ
Strategy's MSCI membership was a load-bearing leg of its stock-issuance flywheel, not a verdict on bitcoin. Removing it matters less for the forced sale than for the premium.

WHAT HAPPENED
→ Oct 15: MSCI finalized a "non-operating company" screen (five financial ratios; out if you fail four). It ends the carve-out for firms that are 50%+ digital assets.
→ Strategy (MSTR) and Metaplanet are at risk. Final list Nov 11; exclusion takes effect at the close of Nov 30.
→ JPMorgan earlier estimated ~$2.8B of passive selling — about 3% of MSTR shares.

WHY IT MATTERS
Strategy buys bitcoin by issuing stock above the bitcoin it already holds per share ($8.41B via ATM in Q2 alone). Part of the demand holding that premium is passive index money that must own MSTR. An index seat quietly powered Strategy's bitcoin machine; MSCI's screen pulls that plug Nov 30. Dent the premium and the whole buy-more-bitcoin loop slows.

BEST CASE AGAINST US
Saylor: MSCI runs "de minimis" capital. True — ~3% of shares is small, and weak MSTR may just track weak bitcoin.

DO THIS WEEK
If you hold MSTR as "leveraged bitcoin," check whether a fund you own holds it via an MSCI index, and whether you're paying a premium over its bitcoin-per-share. Decide which exposure you actually want.

We're wrong if Strategy keeps issuing stock above its bitcoin NAV and buying at its old pace after Nov 30.

Research, not investment advice.
