# SoFi's SOFIE, launched Oct 22, pays a variable 4.40% APY, and it can pay because it is, at bottom, a bank deposit.

**In one line:** SOFIE pays because it is a bank deposit.

The easy read is a better stablecoin: same dollar, plus yield. Break it down. Each SOFIE stands for $1 held at SoFi Bank. The bank can lend that dollar out and share the spread, which is where the interest comes from. The FDIC insures it up to $250,000 per depositor, and SoFi itself says it 'is not a payment stablecoin.' Payment stablecoins, by rule, may not pay holders any interest; the reserve income goes to the issuer.

So the yield comes from banking, and so does the risk. A deposit sits on the bank's balance sheet with insurance behind it. A stablecoin pays nothing and carries the issuer's and the reserves' risk, uninsured.

Before you take interest on any digital dollar, ask three things: whose books is it on, is it insured, and who pays the interest, from what?

We'd change our view if payment stablecoins were allowed to pay holders directly.

Research, not investment advice.
