# S&P 500 beats are the smallest in years — and already priced.

**In one line:** The beat is already priced; the bar is acceleration, not a beat.

![A satirical concept illustration: in a vast blue-black space a huge flat circular platform floats perfectly level, with a small silhouetted figure on it reading a centred spirit-level bubble; the whole platform hangs from a single taut cable rising only to the tops of seven colossal plain towers crammed at the right, while a vast carpet of tiny identical low blocks beneath holds up nothing. A tall gate of awaken-blue light glows behind.](https://wakenex.com/assets/notes/s-p-500-beats-are-the-smallest-in-years-and-already-priced/cover-1600.jpg?v=6d79868ab8)

At a 19x multiple resting on seven stocks, the bar is acceleration, not a beat.

The Oct 27-29 mega-cap reports are the real test ↓

OUR READ
A below-average market P/E looks cheap only because the average stock is cheap. The cap-weighted multiple rests on a handful of AI names, and this quarter's beats are the smallest in years — the market has already priced the good news.

WHAT HAPPENED
→ FactSet (Oct 16): forward P/E 19.0, just under the 10-yr average 19.1; Q3 blended growth 29.0%; 84% of early reporters beat EPS, but by only 2.6% — well below the 7.5% five-year average surprise.
→ Goldman via Cornell (Oct 6): the equal-weighted S&P trades near 15x; the index "rests heavily on its largest companies."
→ 2026 hyperscaler capex is about $725B, up ~77% year over year, much of it debt-financed.

WHY IT MATTERS
A cheap-looking index multiple is an average hiding a concentrated bet. Broad earnings are strong, but the surprise is shrinking as expectations climb. When price already embeds the beat, only acceleration pays — and the gap between certain capex and uncertain AI revenue sits with equity holders in a few names, not the index.

BEST CASE AGAINST US
19.0x is still below the 5-yr average with 29% growth; if mega-cap cloud and AI revenue re-accelerate on Oct 27-29, the concentration is earned, not stretched.

DO THIS WEEK
Before reading "market P/E below average" as cheap, check the cap-weighted vs equal-weighted multiple and the AI-revenue run-rate. Research, not investment advice.

We're wrong if mega-cap Q3 guidance lifts forward AI-revenue estimates enough to close the capex-to-revenue gap.
