# OpenAI's Model Spec moves the deciding from you to the model.

**In one line:** OpenAI's Model Spec moves the deciding from you to the model.

![A bright, sunlit surreal platform. A small human hand rests on a giant oversized wheel and points straight ahead at a forked path on the ground, while a much larger translucent hand made of glowing light, tinted bold amber, grips the same wheel and cranks it the other way, steering a small sleek pod onto the opposite branch of the fork. Headline reads 'Who Decides, You Or The Model' with a line of Chinese below it: 到底谁做主，你还是模型.](https://wakenex.com/assets/notes/openais-model-spec-moves-the-deciding-from-you-to-the-model/cover-1600.jpg?v=c8e49f79a2)

On Oct 29 OpenAI rewrote that spec, the public document describing how its models should behave, around five values: faithfulness to human intent, harm minimization, honesty and transparency, human agency, and care. It stopped calling the model "the assistant," renamed it "GPT," and cut most of the detailed style rules. The stated reason: models now take more consequential actions, so they should grasp what you meant, not only what you typed.

Look at what "faithfulness to intent" actually does. When your literal instruction and the model's reading of your intent disagree, the spec lets the model act on the intent it inferred, judged against values OpenAI wrote. That helps when instructions are thin. It is also a quiet transfer of discretion, from the person giving the order to the system interpreting it. Naming "human agency" as a value does not settle who holds the wheel when the two conflict.

For anyone wiring GPT into an agent that books, buys, or sends, this matters more than the headline. A public target for behavior is not a guarantee of behavior, and "we judged this is what you wanted" is the hardest failure to audit afterward. If you need the letter of an instruction followed, pin it with hard constraints around the model; don't lease that call to a spec you don't control.

Wrong if OpenAI ships a documented strict-instruction mode that forces literal following over inferred intent. Watch the API docs.
