# On-chain cash just split into two tokens.

**In one line:** No-yield rule relocates yield and run-risk into the fund token.

![A hand taps a payment using a huge, hollow, transparent disc-shaped token in a bright white hall; a short clear tube tethers it to a smaller, dense glowing-gold token trapped behind a slow one-way turnstile that lets only a thin trickle of light through. Bold text reads: Spendable token: empty. The yield is locked away. A line of Chinese below reads: 能花的那枚是空壳，收益锁在另一枚里.](https://wakenex.com/assets/notes/on-chain-cash-just-split-into-two-tokens/cover-1600.jpg?v=e782ddc56e)

On Oct 27, BlackRock teamed up with SBI Holdings and Startale to connect a tokenized money-market fund with SBI's yen stablecoin, JPYSC. Japan's rule that stablecoins cannot pay yield hasn't made on-chain cash simpler; the real risk just moved out of the token you're watching.

JPYSC went live in June and now holds about $131.5M circulating. A money-market fund earns yield by nature; a stablecoin is barred from paying it. Once you can swap between them at the moment of payment, your money sits in the yield-bearing fund token until you spend, then converts to the stablecoin, with yield kept until the last second before settlement. The stablecoin becomes a thin settlement skin; the principal and the interest live in the fund token.

The rule meant to keep stablecoins boring and safe instead pushed the yield, and the redemption risk behind it, into the fund leg. So don't ask which token is safer; ask: when everyone tries to swap the fund back into the stablecoin at once, that 'instant settlement' inherits the money-market fund's redemption speed, not a bank's. This breaks if the fund leg keeps redeeming instantly at par even in a run.

Research, not investment advice.
