# JPMorgan adopts Ethereum's rails, not its trust model.

**In one line:** JPMorgan adopts Ethereum's rails, not its trust model.

![Satirical concept image: a single open, unbroken public railway track runs straight to the horizon carrying one massive armored strong-car; the car's only entrance is a guarded turnstile where a faceless uniformed attendant checks the identity of a line of silhouetted figures one at a time, most of the crowd turned away — the rails are open and free, but boarding the car requires passing the one narrow guarded gate, lit by a tall gate of blue light.](https://wakenex.com/assets/notes/jpmorgan-adopts-ethereums-rails-not-its-trust-model/cover-1600.jpg?v=5c023079b9)

The 'bank on Ethereum' headline hides a catch: JPMD is a permissioned IOU only vetted institutions can touch.

What JPMorgan actually put on the public chain ↓

OUR READ
'JPMorgan is on Ethereum' reads like open crypto winning. It isn't. JPMD is a tokenized bank deposit — a claim on JPMorgan — and the bank stays the gatekeeper.

WHAT HAPPENED
→ Oct 19: JPMorgan's Kinexys unit extended JPMD, a USD deposit token, from Base to Ethereum mainnet.
→ JPMD is 'a digital representation of a bank deposit on public blockchain,' redeemable for JPMorgan deposits and limited to the bank's institutional clients.
→ Kinexys has settled ~$4T cumulatively and ~$7B a day onchain.

WHY IT MATTERS
A bank deposit on a public chain is still the bank's deposit — the rails are open, the gate is not.
What got adopted is Ethereum's plumbing (24/7 settlement, smart-contract composability), not its permissionless, trust-minimized model. The credit backstop and KYC stay with JPMorgan. This normalizes a two-tier chain: permissioned institutional money beside permissionless retail assets.

BEST CASE AGAINST US
Rails adoption isn't nothing. Running real bank settlement on Ethereum deepens its role as neutral infrastructure and pulls tokenized assets onchain. If JPMD must interoperate with open DeFi to be useful, the public-chain model may end up shaping the bank more than the bank shapes it.

DO THIS WEEK
Before reading 'JPMorgan embraces Ethereum' as proof crypto's open model won, ask one thing: can anyone who isn't a vetted JPMorgan client actually hold or redeem JPMD?

This breaks if JPMD becomes usable by non-vetted or retail holders, or freely composable with permissionless DeFi, without JPMorgan gatekeeping.

Research, not investment advice.
