# IMF counts AI's circular deals: $300B in, $650B borrowed, $1.4T out.

**In one line:** Vendor financing relocates the AI downside; it doesn't remove it.

![A satirical concept illustration: a colossal figure seen from behind pours a glowing blue stream of light out of its own chest in a loop that feeds straight back into its own back, growing brighter each pass, while a crack splits the pedestal beneath it.](https://wakenex.com/assets/notes/imf-counts-ais-circular-deals-300b-in-650b-borrowed-1-4t-out/cover-1600.jpg?v=3ad067307f)

Vendor financing relocates the AI downside — it doesn't remove it.

Last week credit markets started pricing who eats the loss ↓

OUR READ
Circular financing relocates the AI downside; it doesn't remove it.

When a chipmaker funds the customer that buys its chips, the same dollar books as investment, then as revenue — so if demand disappoints, the loss lands twice on the vendor.

WHAT HAPPENED
→ IMF Global Financial Stability Report (Oct 13): 14 circular deals since 2023 — about $300B equity and $650B debt for roughly $1.4T in future revenue promises — ranked an AI correction among its top financial-stability risks.
→ Oct 14: CoreWeave's bonds sold off and its stock fell 15.5%; Oracle fell 8.8%, Dell 11.3%.
→ CoreWeave still reports a ~$104B contracted backlog (Microsoft, Meta, OpenAI).

WHY IT MATTERS
Equity flows to a neocloud, returns as GPU orders, and lifts the vendor's revenue — while the vendor guarantees the downside. If demand cools, the vendor is hit twice: slower sales and a triggered guarantee.

Vendor financing doesn't remove the risk; it decides who eats the loss. Credit, not the stock, shows it first.

BEST CASE AGAINST US
The vendor can carry it: about $99B cash, commitments near 1.3x free cash flow, guarantees that trigger only on default. If the $104B backlog is real end-demand, this is ordinary vendor financing, not round-tripping.

DO THIS WEEK
Holding index or AI exposure? Separate contracted demand from vendor-funded demand before treating the dip as a discount.

Research, not investment advice.

We'd revise if neocloud debt service is covered by non-vendor-funded customers and credit spreads normalize without new backstops.
