# Hedge funds cutting AI stocks is not the market revising AI.

**In one line:** The AI-stock selloff is unwinding a crowded, leveraged position — not a market verdict.

**WAKENEX concept:** [Match the feedback to the question](https://wakenex.com/concepts/match-the-feedback-to-the-question/)

![A bright, sunlit staged illustration: a giant polished plank balanced on a single central fulcrum like a seesaw, tipped steeply to the floor on one end because a dense crowd of identical faceless silhouettes have all packed onto that same end, while the opposite end rises empty into the air; the hall floor and minimal architecture stay perfectly level and intact. A warm golden shaft of light picks out the overloaded end. White headline text reads 'A leverage unwind, not an AI verdict.' with a Chinese line below it: 是去杠杆，不是对AI的宣判.](https://wakenex.com/assets/notes/hedge-funds-cutting-ai-stocks-is-not-the-market-revising-ai/cover-1600.jpg?v=f77076165b)

Goldman Sachs prime-brokerage data shows hedge funds net-sold about $20 billion of tech over two weeks; five straight sessions of net selling in global AI stocks erased every net purchase made since the start of 2025. The tell is the pace: they cut existing longs about 3.5 times faster than they added new shorts. That is not a bet that demand for chips, data centers, or software is about to fall apart. It is risk reduction on a crowded, borrowed book, and Morgan Stanley logged a de-gross of roughly 7.8% of total equity exposure, the largest in its series since 2016.

The mechanism is simple. The same funds, using borrowed money, held the same longs. On the way up, that crowding pushed prices higher together; when volatility hit and risk limits fired at once, everyone sold, so price fell faster than any fundamental news. What is being priced is who owned the trade and how much they borrowed, not AI itself. Goldman now adds that the book still carries too much leverage, which reads more like an unfinished unwind than a verdict on AI.

What would change this view: over the next quarter, AI leaders actually cut data-center capex guidance, or chip orders visibly shrink. Then it is demand doing the talking.

Don't mistake the unwinding of a crowded trade for a judgment on AI.

Research, not investment advice.
