# Google Cloud's addition of 3 OpenAI models to Model Garden, announced Oct 22, makes switching models easier and leaving Google Cloud harder.

**In one line:** Switching models got easier; leaving Google Cloud got harder.

![In a bright data center with blue, red, yellow and green overhead pipes, a man seen from behind swaps glowing model cartridges with one finger, while his ankle is chained to an enormous ball of invoices wrapped in a Google Cloud band, far from the bright exit door.](https://wakenex.com/assets/notes/google-clouds-addition-of-3-openai-models-to-model-garden/cover-1600.jpg?v=b6141a1ed2)

The default read is more choice and less lock-in. Look at where the switching cost actually sits. The models, GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, are in private preview. They bill on one Marketplace invoice, draw down your existing cloud commitment and count toward Flexible Savings Plans across model providers. The data controls live in the platform too, and two of them, Zero Data Retention and Confidential Compute, are still listed as coming soon.

Swapping a model is a code change. Unwinding a committed spend is a contract, and contracts move on renewal cycles. The lock-in moved from the model to the bill, where it is harder to see and slower to escape.

If you build on it, keep prompts, evals and orchestration outside the cloud. Then the model stays portable, and the commitment is the only thing you'd have to wait out.

We'd change our view if teams start splitting the same workloads across clouds with no commitment penalty.
