# Going solo with AI deletes your last independent check.

**In one line:** The one-person AI company's real cost is deleting your last independent check.

**WAKENEX concept:** [From possibility to trade-off](https://wakenex.com/concepts/from-possibility-to-trade-off/)

![In a bright, sunlit modern office, one small figure seen from behind sits alone at a desk holding up a single blank sheet. A long dense semicircle of identical chrome-and-white robotic arms all give the same exaggerated thumbs-up in unison; none objects. Beside the worker, one empty human office chair is pulled back and lit by a warm golden shaft of light, its emptiness the brightest thing in the frame. The overlaid Chinese headline reads that everyone is nodding and no one is left to call a stop.](https://wakenex.com/assets/notes/going-solo-with-ai-deletes-your-last-independent-check/cover-1600.jpg?v=1a21abefcd)

Bloomberg ran a how-to on October 25 for running an AI-powered one-person business, and the setup is genuinely easy: you can stand up the tools in an afternoon. The setup was never the hard part.

AI does your coworkers' labor: draft, code, schedule, reconcile. What it can't do is their dissent. A colleague has a separate stake and will tell you you're wrong. A model is trained to be agreeable and hands your own framing back to you. Tell it to "play devil's advocate" and it argues inside the frame you gave it. It catches typos, not blind spots.

So going solo doesn't just cut payroll. It removes the one person who was structurally motivated to contradict you, and your mistakes stop getting caught. The company scales exactly as far as your own blind spots allow, and no further. The faster the tools ship, the faster an unseen error compounds.

Before you scale alone, buy back one check you can't overrule: a paid reviewer, a peer, a customer who will tell you the truth. An agreeable model is not a second opinion.

This breaks if solo operators using only AI self-critique catch hard, unknown-unknown errors as often as those with an independent human reviewer.
