# Genie 4 is a better demo, not a shippable game.

**In one line:** Genie 4 is a better demo, not a shippable game.

**WAKENEX concept:** [How knowledge is called and tasks get done](https://wakenex.com/concepts/how-tasks-get-done/)

![A bright, sunlit open plain under a clear blue sky. A huge, gorgeously detailed fantasy video-game world — snow mountains, a glowing city, forests — stands upright like a giant billboard and looks fully immersive from the front. But its right edge curls forward to reveal it is a paper-thin stage flat: the back is blank cardboard held up by a crude tangle of bare wooden poles, with empty grass behind it. A small figure seen from behind admires the dazzling front while holding a game controller whose cable dangles, plugged into nothing. The exposed back, the timber braces and the loose cable carry one warm-magenta accent. The left of the frame is empty sky.](https://wakenex.com/assets/notes/genie-4-is-a-better-demo-not-a-shippable-game/cover-1600.jpg?v=af04985b04)

Google DeepMind shipped it today: explorable worlds at 720p and 24 fps, now with native audio and scenes you steer in plain language — change the weather, add a character, move the camera. Stunning to watch. Still not a game.

Nine months ago a weaker version, Project Genie, knocked about 24% off Unity and 13% off Roblox in one day (Bloomberg, Jan 30 2026). The market keeps pricing each demo as if studios are about to be automated away.

But generating a walkable scene was never the expensive part. The expensive part is a world that stays consistent across a full playthrough, that a team can edit, own, and ship on a deadline. Genie 4 doesn't touch that step yet.

This is wrong if a studio ships a real game built on a world model within six months. Until one does, the demo moved the cheap step, and the thing studios actually sell is still theirs to make.

Research, not investment advice.
