# ETH's leverage is being wrung out.

**In one line:** The signal is in the leverage, not the price.

![In a bright sunlit plaza, a single giant hand wrings a glowing crimson-red coiled spring like a wet towel, squeezing out the last drops of luminous liquid over a large industrial pressure gauge whose needle has fallen to empty; two tiny silhouetted figures are flung off the spring's two ends in opposite directions, one up and one down. The overlaid Chinese headline says the leverage is being wrung out and the signal is not in the coin's price.](https://wakenex.com/assets/notes/eths-leverage-is-being-wrung-out/cover-1600.jpg?v=24edb43fce)

This isn't calm water; it's the amplifier running on empty. It can blow a rally larger, and it can turn one directional bet into a forced liquidation someone closes for you in minutes.

Early today (Oct 25), the ETH perpetual funding rate fell to zero, the first time since Oct 13. Open interest across the market shrank about a quarter over the past month, back to its lowest since June. Almost simultaneously, Binance logged a single $3.01M Ether short position force-closed.

Put it together: funding is the 'rent' you pay to hold a position, and zero means neither side will pay up to lever a direction anymore; falling open interest means borrowed chips are leaving. Liquidation is the other face of the same machine: someone bets direction on margin, price moves, the margin can't cover it, and the exchange closes the position at market, which itself nudges price and can trigger the next liquidation.

Most people watch the coin's price. The real signal is in the leverage itself. Funding tells you how much 'fuel' is left to amplify the next move, and the liquidation list tells you whose directional bet breaks first. With leverage thinned out, the cushion is thin too: the next one-sided bet relights the amplifier, up or down alike.

What this means for you: if you trade ETH with leverage, the marginal risk right now is your own position, not the crowd's. Size to the liquidation cascades you can't see, not to the calm in front of you.

What would change this view: if funding stays pinned near zero while open interest and volume both climb steadily (real spot demand, not fresh leverage), then 'fuel spent, fragile' is wrong; that's healthy post-deleveraging demand. Watch Coinglass funding and open interest.

Research, not investment advice.
