# Bluesky's payments move creator dependence from the algorithm to the audience's wallet.

**In one line:** No lock-in moves creator dependence from the algorithm to the audience's wallet.

![A satirical concept illustration: a small silhouetted performer stands arms-raised on a tiny open platform while the tall cage bars that once surrounded it lie fallen open on the ground, so nothing traps them; yet the performer is held upright only by many thin glowing blue threads running down to the raised hands of a crowd below; a gate of blue light glows behind.](https://wakenex.com/assets/notes/blueskys-payments-move-creator-dependence-from-the-algorithm/cover-1600.jpg?v=38b7e2966b)

Build on a "no lock-in" platform and your dependence doesn't vanish — it just changes who can cut you off.

The freedom it sells you, and the harder test it hands you ↓

OUR READ
A no-ads, low-lock-in network sounds like power handed back to creators. Our read: it relocates dependence rather than removing it. Low switching cost is also a revenue bet — the platform needs a cut of transactions, so it only pays if audiences spend.

WHAT HAPPENED
→ At TechCrunch Disrupt (Oct 15, 2026), Bluesky said it will add payments in the coming months as its first step to make money without advertising.
→ COO Rose Wang: "Because of our infrastructure, we cannot lock people in."
→ CEO Toni Schneider cited his prior open model (WordPress/Automattic, ~$10B), where value returned to the ecosystem.
→ No revenue, GMV or take-rate numbers were given — only a "coming months" timeline.

WHY IT MATTERS
For a creator, dependence changes shape, not size: from "will the algorithm distribute me" (fast, platform-controlled) to "will my audience pay me" (slower, audience-controlled). That is a harder test, not a solved one. Removing lock-in doesn't free you from dependence; it hands it to the audience's wallet.

BEST CASE AGAINST US
For tooling and infrastructure, switching freedom attracts users — WordPress is a real precedent. Consumer social is the weak spot: paid-exchange volume has always been thin, which is why ad models won.

DO THIS WEEK
Before betting a living on any "creator-first" network, test the wallet, not the promise: can a real slice of your audience pay now — not "in the coming months"?

This breaks if Bluesky later adds ads or raises its cut — dependence back at the platform; it weakens if payments fund real operations without ads within a year.
