# Bitcoin ETF flows measured the carry trade, not conviction.

**In one line:** ETF flows measured the carry, not conviction.

**WAKENEX concept:** [Match the feedback to the question](https://wakenex.com/concepts/match-the-feedback-to-the-question/)

![A bright, sunlit concept illustration under a deep-blue sky fading to pale daylight. On the right, a large steel measuring caliper: two heavy horizontal jaws held by a spring, their gap almost fully closed, the thin remaining gap lit warm amber. A short stream of gold coins spills from the closing gap and thins to one last bright coin falling in mid-air. At lower left, a faceless businessperson in a grey suit, seen from behind, walks away carrying a briefcase. On the far right a solid marble vault block sits still, with one calm amber coin resting on top, untouched by the closing gap. Bold white serif text on the left reads: Flows Measured the Carry, Not Belief, with the word Carry in warm amber, and a Chinese line below: 资金流衡量套利，不是信念.](https://wakenex.com/assets/notes/bitcoin-etf-flows-measured-the-carry-trade-not-conviction/cover-1600.jpg?v=c5f51ccb56)

Galaxy Research read the 13F filings through June: nine firms (Millennium, Brevan Howard, Goldman Sachs, D.E. Shaw among them) cut 68,000 BTC of spot ETF exposure, about $5.4 billion. The easy headline is that Wall Street is fleeing Bitcoin. The filings say something narrower.

Most of that money was never a directional bet. It ran a cash-and-carry position: own the spot ETF, short CME futures, pocket the gap, funded against Treasury bills. The position lives and dies on one number. The basis compressed from 3.9 points over T-bills to 0.6, and the annualized spread fell from 7.9% to 4.8%, below what it costs to run the desk. So the trade closed itself. Asset managers' net long fell 57%, from 43,300 to 18,400 BTC.

A net outflow answers one question: did the carry still pay. People hear a different one: do institutions believe. Those are different signals. If you want to read conviction, watch who holds without the hedge: wealth platforms and sovereign funds like Mubadala added through the same window.

The 13F data lags to June, so this reads a quarter already gone rather than today's tape. The lesson survives it. An institutional position is a funded spread until the spread is gone. Watch the basis; the flow headline was never a reading on belief. We'd revise this if the next 13F shows those same funds piling back into spot ETFs while the basis stays near zero.

Research, not investment advice.
