# Binance is the biggest exchange, and scale is why this hurt.

**In one line:** Being the biggest exchange widened the blast radius, not safety.

![A bright, sunlit concept scene under a clean turquoise sky. One colossal mirror-glass treasury tower dwarfs a cluster of smaller buildings around a wide plaza. A single small golden key has just been pulled from a keyhole at the tower's base, and from that one empty hole a glowing crack races up the entire facade and jumps along thin cables to the smaller buildings, cracking the whole district at once. A single hand reaches in from the lower right holding the withdrawn key; no face. A small Binance logo sits on a light plate in the lower left. Headline in English, "One key, every reserve", with a Chinese line below it, "一把被盗密钥，动了所有人的储备".](https://wakenex.com/assets/notes/binance-is-the-biggest-exchange-and-scale-is-why-this-hurt/cover-1600.jpg?v=4a421f3d37)

Being the biggest didn't make customer coins safer; it widened the blast radius. On Oct 29 a stolen signing key took over one of its hot wallets and roughly 195,470 ETH was swept out. Per Binance's own Oct 1 reserve data, the drained wallets were the ones backing customer ETH balances; after the hack its ETH is backed at only about 94%.

Strip it down. Your "balance" on an exchange was never coins that are yours on-chain. It is an IOU the exchange owes you, and whether it can be honored depends on its reserves. The hacker didn't steal "the exchange's own money"; it stole the reserves that back your IOU. Yi He and Changpeng Zhao say they'll make users whole from the SAFU insurance fund, which is precisely the point: your "coins" were always a bet on Binance's solvency, not keys in your own hands.

Worse is what scale does next. The attacker swapped freezable stablecoins for unfreezable ETH on Uniswap; Aave froze its Ethereum V3 markets; Tether, Circle and others froze about $2.5B in stolen assets. One key failure at one platform propagated across the chain within hours through shared DeFi plumbing. "The bigger it is, the safer it is" has it backwards: scale widened the blast radius, it didn't add redundancy.

What would change this: Binance producing a third-party audit that confirms its ETH is fully backed again, withdrawals running without limits, and zero net user loss. Even then it cost you nothing only because you depended on its balance sheet, not your own keys. If you keep long-term holdings on an exchange, treat the balance as counterparty credit exposure, keep what you trade, move the rest to self-custody. Research, not investment advice.
