# Most-used on OpenRouter is a price signal, not proof of capability.

**In one line:** Most-used on OpenRouter is a price signal, not proof of capability.

**WAKENEX concept:** [Results alone don't prove capability](https://wakenex.com/concepts/results-dont-prove-capability/)

![Bright warehouse illustration: a champion's rosette crowns a tall podium built from cheap cardboard cartons, warehouse pallets and discount price tags, with a banner on its front; a conveyor belt and a crowd of tiny silhouetted workers funnel a river of identical small parcels up to it, while a refined precision instrument sits ignored under glass on a quiet pedestal nearby.](https://wakenex.com/assets/notes/being-the-most-used-model-on-openrouter-is-a-price-signal/cover-1600.jpg?v=bc52a7a03d)

As of October 27, DeepSeek routes about 46% of the tokens developers send through OpenRouter, more than OpenAI (~12%) and Google (~5%) combined, and the platform's top two models are both the cheap DeepSeek V4.1 Flash variant. The easy read is that DeepSeek is winning the model race. The ranking says something narrower.

Read the mechanism before the ranking. DeepSeek ships open weights, so dozens of hosts compete to serve it and the per-token price falls toward zero. A developer running high-volume, cost-sensitive work (bulk classification, cheap coding agents, synthetic data) routes to the cheapest model that clears the bar. A usage board measures exactly that: price times availability times how much grunt work a model is trusted with. It does not measure which model is best.

So 'DeepSeek passed OpenAI and Google' mostly means DeepSeek became the default cheap utility rather than the frontier. The more a model tops this board, the more it is being consumed as a low-margin commodity. Part of the lead is real quality; DeepSeek V4 is genuinely strong at code. You cannot read that off the volume.

Picking a model? Don't treat most-used as best. Run your own task, price the total cost, and read the leaderboard as a map of what is cheapest-adequate. We'd revise this if independent capability tests, not usage, showed DeepSeek's flagship leading OpenAI, Google and Anthropic outright over the next quarter.
