# Apple Intelligence in China runs on Alibaba's Qwen, not Apple's own model.

**In one line:** Apple Intelligence in China runs on Alibaba's Qwen, not Apple's own model.

![A dark midnight-blue concept scene. A small sleek handheld slab stands center-right with a blank, lifeless screen. Behind it a much larger monolithic engine-block glows with electric awaken-blue light, and a thick luminous cable pipes that light from the block into the back of the small device, which only glows from the borrowed light. An anonymous hand rests on a control dial on the big block, ready to dim or cut the flow. The left of the frame is empty dark space. Headline in English, "Apple's AI in China is Alibaba's", with a Chinese line below it, "中国版苹果 AI 跑的是阿里模型".](https://wakenex.com/assets/notes/apple-intelligence-in-china-runs-on-alibabas-qwen-not-apples/cover-1600.jpg?v=993a63fbaf)

On October 31 Apple confirmed its first batch of China AI features (Live Translation, Writing Tools, Visual Intelligence, Clean Up, Genmoji) opens for developer-beta testing on November 4 and ships with iOS 27.3 in December, all powered by Alibaba's Qwen inside Siri and Writing Tools. This first wave excludes the next-generation Siri Apple showed at WWDC 2026.

Here is the detail that matters: Apple did not pick Qwen because it tested best. Beijing's rules bar the foreign models Apple runs everywhere else, so to keep selling AI in its largest hardware market Apple handed the model layer to a domestic lab. For anyone who turns these features on, "Apple Intelligence" now means an Alibaba model you cannot see, cannot swap, and did not choose, picked to satisfy a regulator rather than you.

That is the gap between exposure and dependence. You gain a feature; the real exit cost, which model answers you and under whose rules, moves to Apple and Beijing. Alibaba built no phone, yet it just rented Apple's entire China install base. This breaks if Apple ships a user-selectable model in China, or moves these features to another provider at low cost.

Before you lean on any assistant, ask the question the launch noise hides: if the provider swapped the model or the rules tomorrow, what could you still carry out the door? Here, the honest answer is nothing.
