# An onchain price oracle is a toll booth, not neutral plumbing.
On October 27 CF Benchmarks built one across the crypto market.

**In one line:** An onchain price oracle is a toll booth on the whole market.

![A bright, sunlit open-air marketplace under a clear turquoise sky. Dozens of small, different-coloured market stalls crowd the ground; from every stall a thin glossy gold pipe rises, bends inward and plugs into the base of one colossal ornate brass pressure dial raised high on a single slender pillar on the right. It is the only dial in the plaza and its round face is completely blank. At the foot of the pillar a tiny booth holds one small figure seen from behind, resting a hand on the single brass valve every pipe must pass through. The left of the frame is empty turquoise sky.](https://wakenex.com/assets/notes/an-onchain-price-oracle-is-a-toll-booth-not-neutral-plumbing/cover-1600.jpg?v=7564aede46)

CFB Oracle puts the reference rates that settle BlackRock's bitcoin ETF and CME's crypto futures directly onchain, starting with Ethereum, HyperEVM and Robinhood Chain. CF Benchmarks is owned by Kraken's parent, Payward. Products already settling to these indices hold more than $120 billion.

The "assets go onchain" story misses the real move. You can tokenize the asset, fork the chain, swap the venue. You cannot swap the number everyone agrees the asset is worth. Once onchain funds, baskets and perps all settle to CFB Oracle, the pricing layer belongs to one regulated provider, the one input a builder cannot route around.

Then the second move. Payward will run its own U.S. perpetual futures, powered by Hyperliquid, against its own oracle. It owns the number and the venue that trades on it.

So builders get BlackRock-grade data "for free" and hand over their one non-substitutable dependency to a firm that also competes with them. This read is wrong if, a year from now, a second credible onchain benchmark prices a real share of onchain derivatives. If one provider still sets the number, the open-infrastructure framing was marketing.

Research, not investment advice.
