# A search API below cost isn't a discount; it buys the doorway.

**In one line:** A search API below cost buys the default doorway, not a discount.

![A bright, sunlit concept scene under a clean turquoise sky. On the right, a line of small featureless figures seen from behind strolls lightly through one wide, welcoming golden one-way turnstile doorway — the entry side airy and almost free. But the moment each figure steps to the far side, a glowing cable clamps to its back and swells into a dense tangle of thick roots driving into the ground, trapping them so none can walk back out: easy, cheap entry on one side, a mass of rooted tethers on the other. The left 45% is empty sky. Headline in English, "Easy to plug in. Rooted to leave.", with a Chinese line below it, "插上线很容易，离开已被生根绑住".](https://wakenex.com/assets/notes/a-search-api-below-cost-isnt-a-discount-it-buys-the-doorway/cover-1600.jpg?v=9dca88ef11)

Baidu just cut the promotional price of its Search AI API to 4.9 yuan per 1,000 calls at a 2026-10-30 Beijing briefing, set deliberately just under DeepSeek's standard 5 yuan. A search API is an agent's eyes: it crawls, indexes and returns live web results for the model, and that carries real compute and bandwidth cost that cannot be near zero.

Yet a row of Chinese providers has driven it to the floor: Qianwen turbo 3 yuan, Volcano 4, Baidu 4.9, DeepSeek 5, Tencent 7, Zhipu and Kimi 10, while comparable web search from Google and Brave runs about 34 and from OpenAI and Anthropic about 67, seven to thirteen times more. The gap doesn't vanish; whoever covers it is buying a position, sitting between your agent and the web.

Once your agent is wired to the cheapest one, what's cheap is the per-call meter; what gets expensive is leaving. Re-wiring means code changes, every query you sent is already in their hands, and your prompts have bent around that provider's ranking and format. "Cheaper is better for me" quietly moves the exit cost onto you.

This breaks if these APIs are thin, standardized interfaces you can switch with one line of config while keeping your own query data — then it is just an ordinary price cut. If you're choosing a retrieval source for an agent, price the cost of switching away first, then decide whom to trust with its eyes.
