# A crypto ETF is a redemption promise, not the coin.

**In one line:** A crypto ETF is a redemption promise, not the coin.

![A bright, sunlit marble hall. A giant glass vault on a pedestal holds a cluster of glowing translucent tokens frozen in ice around one oversized amber clock with no numbers, still ticking. Beside it a small teller window has a queue of tiny figures seen from behind; the front person's hand reaches into the slot but only a blank paper slip flutters out. Overlaid title: 'Crypto ETF. A promise, not the coin.' with the line below it '加密 ETF 是一张赎回承诺，不是币'.](https://wakenex.com/assets/notes/a-crypto-etf-is-a-redemption-promise-not-the-coin/cover-1600.jpg?v=b23bd5f1a5)

A crypto ETF sells you "compliant, convenient exposure." But what you own is not the coin — it's a standing promise to redeem. The wrapper removes the hassle of custody, and with it your direct ownership of the asset.

US crypto ETFs now reach far past Bitcoin: Grayscale's October 21 expansion added Solana, XRP, Dogecoin, Avalanche, Chainlink, Hyperliquid, Sui and Zcash. The packaging has outrun the rulebook. In the SEC's 27-question review of "novel ETFs," one question goes straight to the weak point — whether a staking fund can meet redemptions when holders all pull out at once, because the on-chain coins are locked and unstaking sits in a queue, while the ETF promises daily redemption.

The mechanism is simple. When the lock-up period and the redemption window don't line up, the fund has two options left — break its "redeem anytime" promise, or force-sell coins at the worst moment to pay out. Either way, the one who eats the timing gap is the retail holder at the back of the line, not the issuer who collects the fee and writes the redemption rules. Crypto is deleveraging right now, which is exactly when that mismatch gets stress-tested.

One thing to take away: whenever something "locked" is packaged as "available anytime," ask three questions: what is locked, what is promised liquid, and who covers the gap when they don't match. We'd revise this if issuers use in-kind redemptions plus a large enough liquidity buffer to meet redemptions without forced selling.

Research, not investment advice.
